New VoIP Release – Random Extension Password

We have recently deployed an update to the VoIP control panel which changes the way passwords are generated for hosted VoIP extensions.

Customers are no longer be able to specify their own password in the control panel. Instead they are only able to generate a new password. This password is a 16 character string and displayed on the control panel only as they generate it. Once generated the password is not displayed again.

The displayed password is segmented into four blocks of 4 characters for ease of use, but must be entered without spaces into the phone, or device connecting as the extension. If you copy and paste the password then the spaces will not appear in the string.

For users with JavaScript enabled, the password is generated (and saved) using AJAX in real-time. The password should be live on the system within 10 seconds. Without JavaScript, a tickbox is shown and the user will need to click on that before clicking the save button at the bottom of the page. The new password is then shown.

We’re pleased to launch our new Call Barring feature

In recent months many VoIP providers have seen a large increase in attempted fraudulent activity on their platforms. So, as part of our commitment to keeping our customers safe, we are introducing a new feature to our VoIP service: Call barring.

Call barring will allow you to select which destinations (e.g. specific countries, premium rate numbers) lines on your account are permitted to call. Our call barring feature allows you to block calls to chosen destinations on a per extension basis. This means that any calls to destinations you have not permitted will be blocked, protecting you from any fraudulent activity. This new feature is now available to all our VoIP customers.

By default, all customers (and extensions) are able to call UK numbers and certain low cost international destinations. Any attempt to make a call to any other country will fail, and you will hear a forbidden tone.

If you wish, you can manually allow calls to other destinations of your choice.

Modifying call barring settings

If you wish to create a custom call barring rule, click on Call Barring in the control panel menu. You can base your new rule on an existing rule set if you wish, and the allowed destinations from this rule will be copied to your new rule. This is useful if you only want to make a few changes. By default, we have two rules pre-configured – UK and low cost international and UK only.

Alternatively, you can use [blank], which will give you a blank canvas to start from. Do bear in mind that using this will mean ALL calls would be barred until you allow destinations.

Enter a name for your reference and click Create. Your new rule will appear and you can click edit to configure it.

Configuring a rule is simple. You will see a list of destinations, and to enable (or disable) calls to that destination simply click the box alongside it. If you need to add more specific rules, for example restrict calls to a certain area code within a country, simply click the add… link and enter the area code. Click Save to apply your changes to the rule set.

Applying call barring rules to extensions and trunks

There are two ways of applying call barring rules to extensions and trunks. To apply it to several at once, it’s easiest to do it from the rule editor page. On the right hand side you’ll see a list of all extensions and trunks, and you need to simply select the ones you wish to apply to the rule to and click Save.

To modify an individual extension, simply navigate to it on the Extensions page and scroll to PSTN/Billing Settings. Select the required call barring rule from the dropdown box and click Save.

Setting a default rule

If you wish for a customised rule to be used as default for all new extensions and trunks that you create, navigate to Call barring and select Default alongside the rule.

Please note that this only affects any new extensions or trunks, and not all. If you wish to apply the rule to existing trunks too click edit and apply there. You can use the Select all button to make this process easier if you have a lot of extensions and trunks.

If you delete any call barring rules that are being used by extensions or trunks, they will revert to using this default rule. If you delete the default rule itself the global default (UK and low cost international) will be used instead.

Blocking all external calls

If an extension is only required for internal calls you can easily block all outbound calls by turning off PSTN Access on the extension. To do this, navigate to the Extensions page and select the extension you wish to configure. Scroll to PSTN/Billing Settings and look for PSTN Access.

Calendar based routing over Easter

This week I had a good example from a client needing to use calendar based routing. Like many people he is taking advantage of the multiple bank holidays and is having a long break abroad by taking off the 3 working days between the bank holidays.

While he is abroad he no longer wants his mobile phone to be included in the call flow for incoming calls. So using the calendar based routing we’ve set up the calls to his VoIP number to be sent straight to the office phone (and a new voice mail message just for these three days if it doesn’t get answered by his colleagues). The service will switch itself back to normal settings the next day. Handy :-)

New Call Parking Feature

We are pleased to announce that our VoIP service now has Call Parking functionality.

Call parking is simple. A user dials #*700 on their phone to transfer a call to a parking bay. The caller is put on hold and a four digit reference is read out to the person that parked the call.

Pass this reference on to the person who wants to pick up the call. They simply dial *XXXX (replacing the XXXX with the four digit reference) to retrieve the call.

Call parking differs to a normal call transfer, because when transferring a call you choose the destination. When using call parking, any one of a number of people could later take over the call.

Setup

Configuration of call parking is performed on a per extension basis. Head to the extension and scroll down to Divert and Transfer Settings. There is a Call Parking tick box here. There are two potential configurations:

  • To allow the user to both park and retrieve calls: tick both the Call Parking and Hash Transfer boxes (enabling hash transfer will allow the #*700 shortcode to be dialled
  • To allow the user to retrieve calls only: tick just the Call Parking box.

New call routing features now released

This month we have released three new features based on suggestions posted on our feedback system.

We have now introduced caller ID based routing, calendar based routing and PIN access control to help make your phone system work the way you need it to.

Caller ID based routing
This feature allows you to route or reject calls based on the caller’s phone number. It allows you to create simple rules that give you full control of where calls are directed to within your company.

Calendar based routing
This feature allow you to specify how you want your calls to be routed based on the date. They are more suitable than hunt groups for this task, because whereas hunt groups route based on time of day, calendar call rules allow you to route calls based on the specific date.

PIN access control
This feature allows you to only route callers who can enter a valid PIN code.
You can use these controls at the start of your phone system, such as when as a caller dials your external phone number. Alternatively you can apply a PIN access control after they’ve reached a certain part of your phone system, for example after selecting a specific option from a voice menu.

Pleased to welcome new client Number One Mortgages

We’re pleased to welcome Number One Mortgages Ltd as a new VoIP Advantage customer. Number One Mortgages have selected our Multi-User VoIP package along with Siemens IP DECT S685 wireless phones to manage their calls. Kevin Dunks, Managing Director of Number One says:

“First, VoIP Advantage are easy to speak to & very helpful. The way we’re able to handle calls now is excellent, with the office phone ringing first, then the mobile. Plus we have it working differently depending on the time of day and who’s in the office. We like the fact that we have one phone number but as many extensions on it as we need. Even the fax to email service has already proved really handy.”

Gradwell, 2010 ISPA Award Winners: Best Internet Telephony

We’re very pleased to congratulate our VoIP platform provider Gradwell who have become 2010 ISPA Award Winners: Best Internet Telephony.

The Internet Industry Awards, now in their 12th year, recognise the best individuals and organisations in the UK internet industry, following laborious testing and an independent judging process by broadband communications authority Epitiro, as well as celebrating innovation and best practice.

ISPA stated that along with providing the best network for voice traffic, use of new media and clear communication with customers made Gradwell the worthy winner.

Peter Gradwell said: “We’re ecstatic to have won this ISPA award! We’ve always taken great care to listen to our customers and using their suggestions and feedback we have invested significantly in improvements to our service over the last few years. Winning this category is therefore extremely important to us, independently verifying to the industry that our service is being recognised.”

Matt Townend, managing director of illume Consulting, who monitor the UK VoIP market, added: “Gradwell have demonstrated strong growth in the SME segment of the market, reaching a 23% market share in the 1-10 employees segment of the market for March 2010.”

Gradwell named as finalist for UK Best Internet Telephony prize

We are proud to announce that our VoIP platform provider Gradwell has been named as a finalist for the prestigious Best Internet Telephony prize at the 12th annual UK Internet Industry Awards.

The nomination for the awards, hosted by ISPA (The Internet Service Providers’ Association), comes after three months of rigorous testing by ISPA’s technical testing partner, Epitiro.

ISPA Secretary General, Nicholas Lansman said, “Each year the ISPA Awards rewards the UK’s top Internet companies after a process that involves thorough technical testing and judging from an independent panel. I would like to congratulate all of the finalists and look forward to welcoming them to the Awards gala dinner ceremony, which looks like being one of our biggest to date.”

A nomination from ISPA means a lot to us as they undertake technical testing by making calls through our systems. This shows that VoIP has matured and can now stand shoulder-to-shoulder with traditional landline telephony to provide a communications backbone for small businesses.

Responsibility for selecting the winners now lies with a high-profile panel of expert judges, which is this year chaired by Think Broadband Editor Andrew Ferguson.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on Thursday 8th July.

Costs increasing so pricing increasing a little from 1st May

A message from our VoIP platform provider:

Unfortunately there are a number of continued pressures within the industry on our electricity, network and telecoms costs and therefore, in order to maintain the current levels of investment, we need to announce a number of pricing increases.

In the last year Gradwell has continued to grow and invest its profits in building a bigger and better service for customers. That equates to £185,000 invested in our support team and £250,000 in rebuilding our infrastructure and server platforms – the direct result has been a significantly improved and more reliable service to customers, with measured increases in customer satisfaction.

Changes to Call Charges

Peak rate calls to Vodafone and Orange will rise from 10p to 12p per minute from 1st May 2010 for all direct customers. Calls to 3 will be 17p per minute peak rate.

Whilst OFCOM (the industry regulator’s) long term aim is to reduce these costs and get them to under 5p (wholesale) by the end of 2010, the mobile networks are currently varying their charges month on month and we cannot sustain these fluctuations in cost.

This change is effected from 1st May 2010.

Changes to Hosted PBX & SIP Trunking Rentals for new Customers

For new customers signing up to Gradwell’s Hosted VoIP products (direct retail, or via a certified partner), we will be making a small increase of £1 per month to the monthly rentals, in order to cover rises in power & operations costs. These changes come in to effect from 1st May 2010.

◦Multi-User VoIP – now £8 per month.
◦SIP and IAX Inbound Trunks – now £4 per month.
◦Remote Call Forwarding – now £4 per month.
In addition, over the next 3 months, we will be phasing in these price changes to existing customers, in line with our contractual notice periods.
